Design of Addictions
In January 2014, Nigel Sielegar of Corse Design Factory held a lecture and workshop in conjunction with Desain Grafis Indonesia for their new DGI Design Camp. The theme for the workshop was "Design for Addictions," an exploration of the relationship between design and habitual behavior.
Nigel opened the conversation with a simple question: If design can create interactions, and interactions can create habits, can design create addictions?
After an exploration of "bad" addictions, such as cigarettes and gambling, Nigel proposed the concept of using design to contribute "good" additions, such as encouraging better eating, reading more, and reducing litter. Workshop participants were then challenged to come up with design solutions for these healthy habits.
