Goal Setting 101: 3 Rules To Live By

2018 is already off to a busy start, but don’t let yourself get behind. Whether or not you made any New Year’s Resolutions for yourself, you probably have a number of personal goals you’d like to achieve. If your goals often feel intimidating, you’re not alone. Goal setting is a skill set unto itself. Here are our three main rules for goal setting so you can set yourself up for success.

Make sure your goals are attainable.

If you set a goal that’s too big or difficult, you’re setting yourself up for failure. You’re not going to be able to lose a hundred pounds in a month or turn a profit of 50 grand in a week. And if you are able to— please tell us your secret. When you’re deciding on goals for yourself, make sure that they are attainable. They need to be achievable or you’ll waste time and energy, eventually losing motivation. Be realistic and set goals that you know you can accomplish.

Write your goals down.

Maybe this one’s obvious to you, but many people make mental note of their goals without ever putting them down on paper. By simply writing your goals down, you instantly make yourself more accountable and the goal will feel more tangible. Keep it somewhere you can see it often, so you stay reminded and motivated.

Make a plan.

Don’t solely focus on the outcome. There are a number of steps you’ll need to take along the road to meeting your goal. Make a plan that covers every individual thing you’ll need to do in order to achieve your goal. By making clear each step, you’ll find it easier to accomplish your goals. You’ll also feel so good when you can check these steps off of your list. It’s a great reminder that you are on your way to greatness.
